Description

Fabulous 12 foot long trophy oar or ‘winning blade’ for Merton College’s victory in the 1951 Oxford University Eighths Week bumps competition. The blade is decorated with the College and boat club crests, the title ‘Head of The River’ (given to the winning team), the names and weights of the crew and the names of the three bumped crews Trinity, New College and Magdalen. Sold together with the oar is a pair of photographs of the crew in action on the river and sat with the trophy in their boat club colours, framed with a hand painted page also recording the details of the Merton First Eight crew.
