Description

Beautiful 19th.c. hand stitched patchwork bedspread c.1880. Measuring 70″ x 50″ and comprised of 140 individual ‘log cabin’ patchwork squares. Note how the the light and dark fabrics are cleverly arranged to make an overlaying diamond pattern known as sunshine and shadow. With each square made up of 21 individual pieces of cloth, the entire quilt contains a staggering total of 2940 pieces. A fascinating variety of velvets, silks, prints and brocades patterned with flowers, stripes, spots and checks. With no batting or backing fabric the hand sewn construction of each individual square and the way they are joined is revealed on the reverse. Generally very good condition, the colours still strong and with only minimal wear to some of the more delicate silks. Presented on a wooden batten for hanging.
Dimensions: length 70″, width 50″.
