Description

Unusual pair of large Black Forest carved figures produced as an advertising display for the German porcelain Hummel figurines c.1960. Nearly two foot tall, beautifully carved from blocks of linden wood as young children in Bavarian outfits, playing a guitar and a horn. Each one is signed for Hummel on the base. Excellent condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
Based on the drawings of children by the German Franciscan nun Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel, Hummel figurines were first produced in 1935 but their highly nostalgic view of childhood innocence became increasingly popular in the postwar years. Production continued in Germany under the supervision of Convent of Siessen, where Sister Hummel lived and worked until 2017.
Dimensions: width 16″, depth 12″, height 22″.
