Description
Bound early Victorian literary review magazine containing 54 parts from Jan 25th 1840-Dec 30th 1840. 244 pages with 54 FULL PAGE stone litho plates printed by W. Clark of High Holborn. The plates have 4 images of the young Queen Victoria with Albert and the birth of their 1st princess and also the man "Edward Oxford" who attempted her murder in Hyde Park. Also another plate showing the funeral carriage that was used to bury Napoleon. + other topical engravings inc two delightful parlour scenes of a couple playing chess a full page portrait of the actor Mr Dowton as Sir Robert Bramble a benefit at Her Majesty's June 8th 1840 + Father Mathew "Irish Advocate Of Temperance" administering the "total abstinence pledge". Others inc pretty Victorian beauties and scenes of melodrama and pathos. Each part consists of 4 pages of reviews and serials and poetry Several pages have closed edge tears and some light foxing, the plates also foxed in places mainly at edges. Small quarto magazine. Bound in 19th century plain tan cloth, this is stained and colour dirty and some discolouration. Not affecting the contents. Very SCARCE title. Cunningham was the publisher and printer of "The Romancist and Novelists Library begun in 1839-150's. This title does not seem to be in the British library archives, although a similar title does, but NOT by this publisher. NO OTHER copies located anywhere in institutional Libraries worldwide. This copy was bought 30+ years. Not previously offered before this listing. The size is larger than the various similar period magazines and the engravings given gratis with each issue are thankfully preserved. Probably begun in 1839 as this copy has No 56 as its start issue?DateEarly Victorian :
