Unusual Igneous Rock & Terracotta Female Sculpture

Photos

Description

The well-modelled and balanced terracotta female head with flowing hair applied and morphed to a large chunk of undulating igneous volcanic rock, numbered nine and signed verso with a monogram TA(?).

The whole is in good original condition considering its brittle nature with no chips or cracks. There are two drilled holes for wall mounting, though the sculpture sits just as well on a table top.

The pre-Columbians used to carve from volcanic rock and there are whole villages in existence that are carved out caves from the rocks of Iran. We cannot fathom the cipher to the reverse, but the style and, the rock is most certainly continental.

This is a highly original and imaginative piece of artwork, which would act as a fine table centerpiece or mantelpiece conversation starter.
