Probably Spanish. C. late 17th Century.

Unsigned.

Signs of age, scratches to areas of paint and small dents to the copper.

In later gilt frame.

16 x 13cm (Frame: 24.5 x 21.5cm).

The skull is a powerful reminder of human mortality. In depictions of Saint Francis holding a skull, crucifix, and rosary, the skull symbolises mortality and the Christian concept of "memento mori" (remember you must die), while the crucifix and rosary represent faith, prayer, and devotion to Christ.
