Description

Late Victorian 'Pop Up' Writing Desk. The double flap hinged top having a half round moulded and satinwood banded edge with a further narrow inner banding and stringing. When lifting the two flaps this pulls up the writing area which includes a leather lined slope with hinged lower edge. This in turn can be raised on brass hinged holders and shaped back support to reveal a void interior. Letter racks and pentrays flanked by glass inkpots, lids missing, to the rear. The flaps having leather lined panels and white panels with the days of the week for engagements and one for memoranda. These can be wiped for reuse. Double concave mouldings below the top over line inlaid frieze flanked by oblong panels with double strung edges. A further concave moulding below. The front having leaf carved cabriole pillar supports flanking a satinwood banded panel within a moulded frame with re-entrant corners. Three mahogany lined drawers to the righthand side and three dummies to the left. All with moulded frames and stringing with brass drop handles with mask and leaf decorated back plates. Bramah locks with key. The back with line inlaid panel. All on moulded platform base having hidden castors. Brass makers plate set just above the interior lock inscribed Albert Barker Ld. Manufacturers 5 New Bond St. London W. and with patent numbers.
