Description

An incredibly intriguing genuinely rare piece of handmade furniture with excellent historical provenance, this chess table is of Panamanian origin, expertly crafted from a mix of exotic woods by a prisoner in 1914.

The two tier table features a hidden drawer which opens to reveal a handwritten note stating that the table was made from “every kind of known wood from the forests of Panama” by a West Indian prisoner, and presented to Sir Claude Mallet, his Majesty's Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Panama in 1914.

The table is in very good condition with no losses to the inlaid wood. There is some warping to the lower tier and an old repair to one of the legs but the table is all structurally all in good order.

Panamanian, 1914.
