Description

Circa 1920, good mahogany sideboard by Whytock & Reid of Edinburgh after a design by Sir Robert Lorimer. The rectangular narrow top, with its wonderful selected mahogany, has a three quarter wrap around gallery which rises and falls all the way around and is slightly curved. The cut out centre piece at the back has an oval quarter veneered mahogany panel. The fore edge of the top has carving on both ends and a carved panel in the centre. Beneath the top there are two pairs of doors with matching flame veneers and two crossbanded drawers with rounded fronts and stylish drop handles. Beneath the drawers in the centre there is an apron, a classic Whytock & Reid/Lorimer feature. The gables left and right have wonderful flamed mahogany veneer panels on them and the whole piece stands on 6 very stylish carved cabriole legs. The legs have carved shells on the top, stylish quarter brackets with a carved edge on it, and a slight tear drop at the back. They finish on a stylised foot which is typical of Whytock & Reid/Lorimer. The whole piece is a good rich colour, clean, stylish. Quality Whytock & Reid furniture can be determined by the selection of the veneers/timbers and the execution.
