Description

Circa 1815. A rare and unusual pollard oak work box, probably by ‘James Mein Kelso’. The top in pollard oak with two hinged flaps and a well carved dragoon foredge. To the front is a full-length frieze drawer, fitted for spools of wool and thread. Beneath this is a barrel shaped work basket (recently reupholstered). Two flaps are held open by wooden hinges, and the whole piece rests on a pair of pierced large shaped trestle ends, intersected by a turned and tapering stretcher and all resting on four hipped saber legs with carved rondels on the tops, reeding on the facing and finishing on a gilded brass paw foot with brass castors beneath.
