Description

A 19th century oil on canvas of large proportions, signed 'George Beaumont 1891' to the lower right. Newlyn school.

This emotive work depicts a fisherman delivering bad news to a family with arms outstretched and a pained expression, likely informing them that their loved one was lost at sea. An older lady clasps a cloth to her nose by the window, the father sits with hands clasped and a young lady displaying a wedding ring drapes over his shoulder denoting the widow.

The work is well executed with the hands and portrayal of a moving street scene beyond the net curtained window being of particular note.

There are some small areas of paint loss and an area of retouching. The canvas has been relined. The work is housed in a period gilt frame which has some small losses in areas but generally remains in a very good condition.

A striking work.
