Description

A wonderful oil portrait presented on canvas showing head and shoulders of a late Victorian soldier.

From our research we believe this gentleman to be a member of the Royal Artillery serving during the Boer War. This would date the painting as circa 1899-1902.

Unfortunately we do not know either the artist or sitter however this is a portrait of great character.


Condition report.

Canvas and medium in good overall condition for age, minor signs of ageing and loss, no damage to canvas. Minor loss of gesso to top right corner and movement to mitred joints. To the obverse a black sealant has been applied over join between canvas and frame.
