Description

This oak coffer is a superb example of the carving practised in the English counties of Cheshire/Lancashire in the early part of the 17th century. Similar coffers can be seen in Cesincky and Gribble's book on early oak (Figs 83-84, pages 56-57) and in Chinnery Oak Furniture the British Tradition. It is in exceptional condition, with the original patina, except that the ironwork has been replaced and there is an old repair to one back leg (shown). Initials are carved into the top
