Description

A large, impressive, if slightly naive, early 18th Century English school antique oil on canvas family group portrait offered in "country house" condition". This painting has clearly been influenced by artists of the day such as London based artist Charles Phillips (1703-1747) and although not signed does show similar traits to a painting entitled "The Strong Family" currently in The Metropolitan Museum's collection.
Although the family are unknown, the figures are depicted within an interior setting with "grand tour" classical sculpture in the background and green ground with red drape behind the gentleman, his hand resting on books set upon a table. His wife is clearly depicted to the centre surrounded by their children however we could ask who the other lady is to the left. Presumably it is the wife's sister.
We understand that this portrait was hanging in the kitchen of a large property within North Norfolk.
It is presented in a later gesso and gilt frame.
Condition - Our ticket price offers this in "as found country house condition" (please see list below) although it can be fully restored at additional cost (please contact us for details).
The painting has been relined historically traces of historic cleaning are evident and there are minor surface abrasions to the varnish. Some surface scuffs are apparent to the bottom right corner to the immediate right of the gentleman's left leg (see image 4).
Please bear in mind that this painting is in excess of 300 years old so it will have imperfections!
