Description

A charming armorial hatchment painted on wood panel which we are led to believe depicts the Family Crest of The Clan Donald.
Scottish origin. Late 17th Century.
The Crest with Raven above a heraldic shield bearing the associated symbols of The Rampant Lion, An Armoured Hand holding a Cross / Crosslet Fitchee (Gules Red) of the Clan Donald Cross, The Celtic Galley and The Oak Tree which we believe represents Saint Mungo, also known as Saint Kentigern, the founder and patron Saint of Glasgow. Either side, Heraldic Supporters are depicted in the form of naive stylised wild beasts.
Below, the motto translates from "Nec Tempore Nec Fato" which means "Neither Time Nor Fate" . This was the official armorial bearing of the last chief of the MacIains of Glencoe. The Maclains were a branch of the Clan Donald and were massacred on the 13th February 1692 under the orders of Robert Campbell of Glenlyon.
This fine hatchment is presented in a wooden surround.
Condition - some surface wear as per the images however this item does display very well.
