Description

A Georgian oak cased moon phase longcase clock. Choice grain to the oak case with a regional styled fretwork to the hood pediment. An original central brass finial. Dentil cornice moulding below the pediment with brass capped hood columns. A brass and silvered arched dial with cast corner spandrels. A very well engraved dial centre with date aperture and signed 'J Harrison Newcastle' . Blued steel hands. Lunar moon phases to the arch with twin brass indicators for high/low tide markers. A well painted country scene to the dial. An 8-day duration mechanism striking the hours on a bell. Circa 1785.


John Harrison of Newcastle-upon-Tyne is recorded in Baillies' 'Watchmakers and Clockmakers of The World' book as working from 1779 - 1795. He was a clock maker in The Head of the Side, Newcastle and appeared in some trade directories from 1778 to 1795. Other family clockmakers worked in Hexham and Morpeth.
