Description

A good size, and excellent example of 19th Century English Regency period giltwood, circular convex mirror. Topped with a majestic eagle perched on a plinth and bearing chains with acorn shaped spheres from its mouth, flanked by carved acanthus leaves. The convex mirror plate has a large frame with spaced orbs, and an ebonised, reeded slip. Each side having candle arms with four quality bronze holders, carvings of acanthus leaves and foliage with drip trays.

There was a belief that convex shaped mirrors of this time allowed the butler waiting next door to see all the diners at once enabling him to know when to make an appearance.

Convex mirrors not only have decorative appeal, but their deceptive plates also maximise light in interiors.
