Antique Mahogany Sutherland Occasional Table

Description
A very elegant antique mahogany Sutherland occasional table of excellent quality featuring beautifully figured mahogany and fine satinwood inlaid decoration. The shaped rectangular top displays rich flame mahogany grain and is decorated with delicate satinwood stringing that follows the graceful serpentine outline of the table. At the centre sits an attractive oval fan inlay which creates a refined decorative focal point and enhances the overall elegance of the piece.
The table has two drop leaves supported by hinged gate legs which allow it to fold into a narrow form when not in use and open to provide a larger practical surface. This ingenious design makes the table extremely versatile and ideal for use as an occasional table lamp table or drinks table.
Sutherland tables take their name from the Duchess of Sutherland for whom this practical form of table was originally designed during the Victorian period. Their slim proportions allowed them to sit neatly against a wall when closed yet open quickly to provide a useful surface when entertaining guests.
The table stands on finely turned legs united by a turned stretcher for additional strength and stability with the front legs terminating in brass castors which allow the piece to be moved easily when required.
A charming and highly practical piece of antique furniture that would suit both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition Report
The table is in very good antique condition with light age-related wear consistent with normal use. The structure is solid and stable and the gate legs operate smoothly.
