Description

An antique George II mahogany 8 day strike silent longcase clock by the London maker Henry Weedon having a superb figured mahogany case with outstanding rich colour and patina throughout.
The impressive arched brass and silvered dial retains its original finely pierced steel hands, subsidiary seconds dial and desirable strike/silent feature to the arch, allowing the owner to silence the hourly chime during the night, an expensive and highly sought after feature during the Georgian period. The dial is further decorated with elaborate gilt rococo spandrels and engraved Roman numerals with Arabic minute markers.
The elegant mahogany case is of particularly fine proportions with a shaped hood flanked by fluted columns and surmounted by brass eagle finials. The trunk displays beautifully figured mahogany veneers while the raised panel base is especially unusual and attractive with its bold moulded form and shaped panel decoration, giving the clock a stronger architectural appearance than many standard Georgian examples.
The shaped hood is further enhanced by elegant glazed side viewing panels, a feature commonly found on higher quality London longcase clocks of the period, allowing the movement to be admired from multiple angles while adding further lightness and elegance to the overall design.
Longcase clocks such as this would have been one of the most important pieces of furniture within a Georgian home, demonstrating both wealth and craftsmanship while providing accurate timekeeping through its substantial 8 day movement.
A very decorative and impressive genuine Georgian London longcase clock of excellent scale, colour and presence.

Condition / Servicing Note:

Where inspection, testing, or servicing is required this process can take between 2–12 weeks depending on the clock, the work needed, and current workload. This careful approach helps ensure the clock is properly assessed rather than rushed.
