Description

A magnificent old cider jar hailing from the historic Winchcombe Pottery in Gloucestershire.

Dating to around the late 1940s - mid 1950s and thrown from the local red clay dug from the banks of the nearby River Isbourne.

This impressive and highly tactile piece features pronounced throwing rings, a lovely strap handle and the original tap, fashioned from turned fruit wood.

The earthenware body is covered in a gorgeous pale green (lead-based) glaze beneath a dark, thickly-trailed slip.

The design is striking and unusual, with a somewhat Japanese flavour and perhaps recalling / referencing a repetitive motif Bernard Leach (of St. Ives Pottery, Cornwall) used on some of his wares. The piece may therefore represent a certain cross-fertilization of ideas, as both Winchcombe and St.Ives were closely connected in the first half of the century.

The jar possesses a large impressed mark for Winchcombe along with a very scarce maker's mark for Ray Finch MBE (1914 - 2012), one of the greatest artist-potters of the century and who worked at Winchcombe for a period spanning some 75 years.

This jar represents a sound addition to any private collection and is potentially of museum / exhibition interest.
