Description

A magnificent pair of huge Wedgwood Commemorative 'Peace Plaques' or chargers.

Of striking scale and beautifully hand-painted in a rich palette of polychrome enamels.

One depicts Britannia, the rim with the motto of the British chivalric Order of the Garter "Honi soit qui mal y pense" ("shame be to him who thinks evil of it").

The other depicts Minerva, set against the French flag, the rim inscribed "Liberte Egalite Fraternite".

Fully marked verso and impressed 'WEDGWOOD', 'ETRURIA ENGLAND' together with '3KU'.

Each measures approx 37 cms diameter.

These stunning and rare chargers were produced as part of a set of three, commissioned by Sloane & Smith Ltd, Oxford Street, to commemorate the peace of 1919. The set was produced in a limited edition of 250.
