A Beautiful Pair of Antique Reverse Glass Paintings.

Dating to around the middle of the 19th century and Continental School, probably Italian.

The one depicting Madonna and child, in loving embrace, the other Madonna alone, and with crossed hands at her chest.

Both images are of high quality and beautifully rendered, executed in either oil or gouache, on to slightly convex panels of glass. Presented in a fine pair of gilt plaster / gesso oval frames, which set the works off to beautiful effect.

These paintings are offered together as a pair, in unrestored condition, the paintings having a wonderful, slightly jaded / weathered look and appeal. They are incredibly decorative and would look superb on a mantlepiece, in an alcove or flanking a central feature of some kind.

Condition -

Both in weathered, antique condition, with some deterioration and peeling beneath the glass surface. Both however are still readable as images and display well. Deterioration and losses to the gesso frames, as shown. One with more loss than the other. The frames restorable. Verso, one with old backing card with inscription, torn slightly to reveal a view into the back of the glass. The other with a replacement backing card. More photos are available upon request.
