19th Century Anglo-Indian carved davenport

Description

A superb quality 19th Century carved teak Anglo-Indian davenport, profusely carved all over with pierced and carved flowers, foliage and vines, the sloping top having a raised gallery, a green leather writing surface decorated with blind and gold tooling, the hinged top opening to reveal a spacious compartment with two drawers and two faux drawers, one side of the davenport has a single hinged door opening to reveal four graduated drawers with brass recessed handles, at the side of the top section there is a small drawer which opens and then lays flat against the carcass with a pen tray and other compartments, the top section is supported by carved griffins (mythical creatures that were half eagle and half lion) sitting on carved scroll bases, the whole piece sits on a shaped pierced and carved base incorporating mythical creatures at the front. Circa 1860.
