Description

This is a set of Harris Lebus of London oak Arts and Crafts chairs c1890-1910. Harris Lebus was started Louis Lebus in the 1840s when he arrived in Hull after emigrating to Britain. Louis Lebus a German Jewish cabinet maker soon moved to London to grow his business. Moving from premises to premises as the firm prospered by the 1890s they were the biggest company in the country. In 1900 needing a further expansion they purchased 13 ½ acres in Tottenham for their new factory where they stayed until they went out of business in 1969.
This set of chairs is raised on turned legs with a single stretcher to each side, the seat is upholstered with William Morris "Mallow" pattern material. The back is a simple elegant desigh with shaped and fretworked top rail. The splat is very Arts & Craft in style having three simple oak slats. A lovely set of chairs that are stylish comfortable and solid.
