Description

This is a lovely example of a solid Oak Antique Arts and Crafts Bureau Bookcase c1880-1900.  It is an unusual design for this period as most of these designs were made 50 years earlier and more associated with Georgian period.  It is raised on a shaped bracket base with a pair of doors to the lower half revealing a single fixed shelf.  The lower doors have a catch on the inside of the left hand door and a key to the right hand door with foliate carving to the tops of the doors.  Above this is a drawer that pulls forward which is hinged and the button clips to the inside on each side let the front come down on to its stays.  The inside has a single drawer and pigeon holes.  The handles are copper and have foliate designs to them.  The upper section has a pair of opening doors with three shelvs that are adjustable or removable completely.  The tops of the doors have the same carving as the lower half.  The upper cornice is a double quadrant moulding with ogee at the bottom.  A very handsome piece in a great colour.  The top cornice is the same colour as the base but my photography leaves something to be desired.  It splits into three pieces, the lower section, the upper section and the drawer is removable.
