Victorian Oil Painting. Mother & daughter portrait

Description

This is a very endearing 19th Century antique oil painting.

It is a portrait study of a mother and her daughter, beautifully painted in oil, on canvas.

There is a charming naivety about the quality and style of the painting and the warmth and affection of the mother & daughters relationship really shows through.

Period Gilt frame.

There is an inscription on paper attached to the back: Mrs. Chas. Purcell Cotter, nee Mary Anne Caroline Gaitskell, and daughter Alice Harriet.

I made a search to try to find some more information about the lady and her daughter in the painting:
The lady was Mary Ann Caroline Gaitskill, the wife of Reverend Charles Purcell Cotter. They married in 1852.
Alice Harriet Cotter, the little girl was their daughter. Alice might be about 6-8 years old perhaps in the painting, suggesting the painting dates to about 1860
The family lived in Buckinghamshire and the Rev Charles Cotter was the Vicar of a church in the village of Stantonbury.
Alice married Charles Henry Miles in 1892, and died in 1927. I couldn't find any reference to her having children.

Very good condition. It has had a professional clean. Some craquelure.
