AFTER THE ANTIQUE - A PAIR OF BRONZE MODELS OF FAWNS
Portrayed standing with stylised features, raised on rectangular moulded bases, 2nd half 20th century.
18cm wide 20cm high - base 15cm x 7cm

These bronze fawns were cast after an early 1st century AD Roman pair found in 1756 in the garden of the Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum, Italy. In AD 79, the eruption of Vesuvius covered all of Herculaneum in volcanic ash. The town's remains were first excavated between 1750-1765 by Karl Weber and the bronze deer were some of the many antiquities discovered. The original Roman fawns are currently in the collection of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples.
