Description

A very rare month duration English mahogany wall regulator by John Bennett of London c1860, Sir John Bennett (1814-1897) FRAS was an eminent clockmaker and watchmaker. He was born on 15th October 1814 at Greenwich as a son of the watchmaker John Bennett. Bennett is recorded as working at 65 Cheapside in London from 1847 onwards until at least 1883. He was sheriff of London and Middlesex in 1872 and was knighted to become Sir John Bennett. He also followed a career as a politician in London. Bennett died at St Leonards-on-Sea on 3rd July 1897.
This month duration clock with a matted glass dial depicting the words Bennett, Maker to the Queen, Cheapside London has a solid, heavy mahogany case in the Vienna style and is proportioned beautifully even though it is 6ft in length. The size is not out of proportion and has a fine elegance to its stance.
The very well made month duration movement with deadbeat escapement and maintaining power reserve drives a very heavy lead filled lenticular bobbed pendulum that has an arc or around 1 degree rotation. This precision piece displaying the time via fine handmade hands against the matt glass dial.
This is a very rare opportunity to acquire a month duration clock of this standard and would not look out of place in any setting.
