Description

Splendid 17th century Italian painting. Oil on canvas artwork of considerable size depicting a particular and very rare subject, Samson turns the millstone. After being captured by the Philistines, they blind him and force him to do work reserved for pack animals, such as grinding grain. Samson was gifted with superhuman strength granted directly by God, but he loses it due to Delilah's betrayal. The Philistines had promised the girl a large sum to discover the secret of her strength. Samson gives in to temptation and reveals that his weak point was his hair. While he sleeps Delilah cuts them and the Philistines can thus imprison him. The moral of the story is that divine blessings can fail in the face of betrayal or sin and Samson had proven weak in the face of temptation. At the end of the story, however, Samson prays to God and receives temporary strength, thus sacrificing his life to defeat the Philistines will demonstrate his repentance and redemption. Painting of notable pictorial quality attributable to the Lombard painter Carlo Francesco Nuvolone (1609-1662), lacking authenticity. Antique non-coeval frame in excellent quality carved, painted and gilded wood, with some signs of aging. Artwork that has undergone restoration with relining, replacement of the frame and restoration of color in some small points. Overall in excellent state of conservation. Sight size H 130 x W 207 cm.
