Splendid Italian painting from the mid-18th century. Oil on canvas artwork painting of monumental dimensions depicting a very fascinating scene, Artemisia drinks the ashes of Mausolus. Legend has it that after having built an imposing monument for her deceased husband (the so-called her mausoleum) she decides to drink her ashes in the belief that no tomb could be more worthy than her body. The scene is set in a sumptuous eighteenth-century court, full of characters in refined robes gathered under an incredible canopy supported by twisted columns. The queen sadly observes her husband's ashes placed in the cup while countless pages and bridesmaids surround the throne, despairing over what happened and giving dynamism to the composition. Painting of extraordinary pictorial quality and bright colors attributable to the Italian painter Gaspare Diziani (1689-1767), lacking authenticity. Large painting, suitable for a large reception room. Painting that has undergone restoration with relining, replacement of the frame and restoration of color in some places. Overall in good state of conservation.
