19th Century Neoclassical Mythological Painting

Description
Great neoclassical Italian painting from the first half of the 19th century. Oil on canvas artwork depicting a mythological subject of great charm, the wounded Philoctetes. A famous Greek archer, he owned the arrows and bow of Heracles, given to him by Heracles himself who wanted to thank him for having set fire to his pyre. In the expedition against Troy, Philoctetes led a contingent of seven ships, but never reached his destination, because during a stopover on the island of Lemnos, he was bitten by a poisonous snake on the foot. Artwork of notable pictorial quality attributable to a contemporary follower of Francesco Hayez, as the painting is inspired by the prototype of the great master painted in 1820 and exhibited today at the Museum of Modern Art in Bologna. Splendid contemporary frame in finely carved and gilded wood, with small passepartout, of great decoration. Painting already restored with relining, replacement of the frame and recoloring in small spots. Overall in good state of conservation, with some signs of aging.
