Description

A refined 19th-century interior scene. Oil on canvas, first canvas, painting signed G. Spangerberg lower right and dated 1886, attributed to the German painter Gustav Adolf Spangenberg (1828-1891). The painting fully expresses the stylistic signature of its artist, renowned for his meticulous depiction of folk costumes.

He trained at the Academy but also worked in Paris with Thomas Couture, and some of his works are now exhibited at the National Gallery in Berlin. The composition's sweet and playful tone blends with impeccable pictorial rendering, a product of the great German school of the late 19th century. In the scene set in a tavern, a young woman in traditional dress pours wine from a large barrel while a dwarf at her feet drinks from a jug.

The artwork reflects a trend of the time to depict everyday scenes with subtle social irony, a caricatured and ironic manner of costume painting. The composition stands out for its refined harmony of tones, clear design, and attention to detail. It's the perfect painting for a wine bar or historic cellar, ideal for classic or modern spaces where you want to introduce a curious and theatrical touch.

Scenographic wood and plaster frame, highly decorative, with some signs of aging. The painting has some small paint drops (see photo), but is overall in good condition. Internal dimensions: H 83 x W 59 cm.
