Description

A splendid antique oak and elm carved six plank coffer, circa late sixteenth/early seventeenth century, standing at full height with a good colour and patina. The close grained oak front panel, deep carved by an assured hand, displays three lunettes surmounted by flutes in a manner commonly seen on carved oak furniture of the late Tudor/Jacobean period, with scratch block moulding beneath and to the edges of the top and chip carving to the front side edges of the base. The piece is in good solid condition commensurate with age with some minor restoration to the front bracket feet. There is evidence of some early woodworm, now extinct. A genuine lock plate is fitted but the hasp and key are missing. At some stage the hinges have been replaced with an authentic period replacement. The interior contains the original elm candle box.
