Description

19th century lightening rod weathervane arrow with horse.
From the 1850s to the early 20th century, lightening protection in America gave rise to a form of building adornment that included rods, glass balls, finials and sometimes weathervanes.
This copper horse weathervane is a finely cast and realistic model, double-sided. It is constructed as part of the cast iron arrow. There is some damage to the horse, cracks in the metal, but it is an early example of this type of folk art and the overall condition is actually good. It is mounted on a small shaped and carved stone.
