Description

A stunning little pair of desk-top postal scales, the base made from a solid piece of burl Walnut, beautifully shaped and standing on three original turned feet.

These are quite exceptional with brass mounts to the walnut and a holder for the set of four original weights, all beautifully engraved. The weights are marked 4P / 2P / 1P / F these refer to "Postages" which were 1/2oz units used from 1840 to 1871. The "F" were 1/4oz units used for foreign mail routed via France. This makes this an early set of scales dating to c.1860.

The scales itself is again decorated with intricate engraving and both pans are pieced or reticulated showcasing a basket of flowers to the centre. The balance is signed on the back by the creme de la creme of London makers, "Sampson Mordan".

Excellent condition and wonderful to have those original weights. 9 3/4" x 5 3/4" x 3".
