Description

A very fine and important writing box covered in blue leather with an integral carrying handle, the lid gold embossed with the original owner's name " William Heathcote" (possibly for Sir William Heathcote, 5th baronet).

A top quality box with all the markings of a superb example including both the makers mark P & F Schaefer (succrs to Briggs) 27 Piccadilly, London. It is also gold embossed in the interior of the lid Briggs, Makers, 27 Piccadilly, London). The interior of the lid is opened to reveal a compartment for letters and papers.

The lock was made by the top quality Sampson Mordan, London.

The interior is fully fitted with both a Berry's Patent travel inkwell and Light (vesta), a leather desk blotter and various writing instruments.

The box comes with a working key and associated dust cover which has done it's job preserving this fine box.

Excellent condition measuring 11 1/4" x 7" x 5". Victorian in era dating to c.1850
