Description

A very handsome Victorian military explorer's compass dating to around 1840 / 1860 set in a hinged mahogany block measuring 2" square.

The compass has a shapely blued-steel needle (marked N & S) and the card divided into degrees and also showing all the points of the compass. Singed "Stanley, London".

The needle is held by a detent which comes into play when the lid is closed.

This example is lucky enough to have British Broad Arrow mark embossed on the top together the roman numeral II. The broad arrow was used in England (and later Britain), apparently from the early 14th century, and more widely from the 16th century, to mark objects purchased from the monarch's money, or to indicate government property.

Excellent condition, the compass measuring 1 5/8" in diameter and the case 2" square x 3/4". The original brass closure is present and working to the front of the case.
