Description

This is a delightful 18th century stipple engraving by Antoine Cardon in the manner of Angelica Kaufman depicting cherubs at their toil. The hand coloured engraving is in good original order in its original gilded oval frame which measures 30 cms by 17 cms.
Antoine Alexandre Joseph Cardon (1739-1822) was a Belgian portraitist and engraver. He was born in Brussels and was a student of Hyacinthe de la Peyne, painter to empress Maria Theresa, the sovereign of the Austrian Netherlands. He became a professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and made his artistic career in the city. In 1822 Cardon was named a member of the Royal Institute of the Netherlands by Willam II.
