Description

This is a wonderful example of Victorian Papier Mache work as a tilt top table, fabulously hand painted around 1840. The table is very much in the manner of Jennens and Bettridge.

Theodore Jennens and John Bettridge who worked from 1815 to 1864 producing high quality Papier Mache work. They held the Royal warrant, producing work for George III through to Queen Victoria with offices established in London Paris and New York. This piece is quite typical of examples made by their company during this period. Later examples were more commonly in black but this is in the more attractive deep olive green, fashionable in the late Regency period.

The hand painted flowers are a delight with the top featuring large bouquet and birds nest detail. The surface is in remarkably good condition for the age of the piece, with no damage, a fabulous colour and lovely characterful craquelure. This has its original snap top catch and hinges which are in perfect working condition.

The table measures in 66 cms diameter by 70 cms high.
