Description

This is a pair of Georgian hand coloured engravings depicting Brigands confession and Brigands surprised by Papal troops. These famous depictions are from the original paintings by Horace Vernet. He made around 20 paintings with the same colourful subjects and episodes of local life in the Roman countryside. The paintings were comparable to other painters who travelled Italy and mixed artistic classicism with local culture. He was considered a leader among these French painters making him the “juste milieu” between the traditions of romanticism and neo classicism.
This pair of engravings were published by JT Wood of 33 Holywell Street The Strand in London around 1840. They are presented in their original mahogany frames with inner gilt slip.

The frames measure 22.5 cms by 18.5 cms with the image being 14 cms by 10 cms.
