Description

This is a fabulous large carved wooden bear, in the Black Forest style but probably from Hokkaido Island, Japan.
These pieces have been made in Hokkaido for over 150 years having started as a way for farmers to supplement income during the harsh winters, said to be inspired by those who had at the time become so popular in Switzerland.

Overall in good condition, the bear is very characterful and is an example of some scale, measuring 60 cms long, 38 cms high and 32 cms deep.
