Description

This is a very charming Soumakh carpet from the Caucusus region which dates from the late 19th century. The Soumakh technique creates a flat weave tapestry type of carpet which is both beautiful and strong. This carpet has beautifully muted colour palette with soft terracotta and indigo being the main colours. The terracotta field has three medallions flanked by hexagons and tribal motifs enclosed by pretty zigzag borders. There is a little wear to this carpet at both ends but bearing in mind its age it is in really good condition and has great charm. The carpet is a great size, almost square, and measures 275 cms by 232 cms.
