Description

This is a quality 8 Day longcase clock by John Smith of Pittenweem in Scotland which dates from the early 19th Century. The clock has an elegant mahogany case with predominantly plain styling with fluted columns, bracket feet and a swan pediment with blind fretwork above the arched glazed door. It has a very charming original painted dial with moon phase and eight day striking movement. The movement has been fully restored and has a years running guarantee.
John Smith is well known as a very talented clockmaker from a tiny village Pittenweem in Fife in Scotland. His most famous clock is in the royal collection in Clarence House it was presented to The Duke of York and Lady Bowes-Lyon on the occassion of their marriage. It plays a selection of Scottish Aires and impressively it does not strike or run on Sundays, resuming at midnight. A similar clock is in the possession of the Duke of Buccleuch.
Whilst this longcase is a very different clock to those in the royal collection it is obviously a rare clock of very fine quality. John Smith of Pittenweem was an ingenious craftsman and his clocks were of the highest quality. He issued an advertisement in 1775 which informs us 'he was bred in the trade and had never been out of the country'.This clock has lovely proportions measuring 210 cms in height 46 cms wide by 25 cms deep.
