Description

Rare large Arts & Crafts copper planter made by the Newlyn Industrial class. This in an example of the earlier work when some items were darkened to give a rich patina. The front has a pair of fish swimming towards each other amidst the seaweed. The reserve has a beautifully riveted wave seem. The handles are the typical early twist design. This jardiniere is unmarked as items made before 1908 were not required to be. I date this at around 1895. The early unmarked pieces are more desirable than the later commercially marked items for the tourist trade.
Height 20cms. Diameter 22cms. offered in good original condition with a small ding to base. It is watertight. The fixing of one handle is slightly out of line as shown. Very minor rust at rim.
