Description

A fine Japanese Meiji period carved hardwood okimono of a prowling tiger.

This most pleasing hand carved hardwood Japanese Meiji period okimono depicts a muscular prowling tiger. Its body is slightly lowered in a stalking position with its mouth open showing a formidable array of teeth which in addition to its large paws with sharp claws makes this large cat a top natural predator.

This wonderful study has been carved from a single piece of dense rich hardwood including the naturalistic base. All of the elements are original and are in good condition with no damage.

This pleasing okimono has developed a rich dark patina over the last century.

Japanese, circa 1900
