Description

A Japanese Meiji period carved boxwood okimono of Fukurokuju, the god of wealth and happiness.

This exceptional Japanese Meiji period okimono depicts Fukurokuju, the lucky god of wealth and happiness.
The figure is very finely carved from a single piece of dense tightly grained boxwood, which is a very difficult medium to carve and shows that the artist who produced this fine okimono was a master craftsman artist.

Fukurokuju is depicted in a standing position. He has the characteristic large, bold cranium for which he is very well known together with his long beard.

He is dressed in simple robes, tied at the waist. In one hand he is holding a large fruit and in the other he is holding a large, gnarly, ornate staff with a hanging scroll.

The boxwood has developed a lovely rich golden colour with a darker patina in some places.
Japanese, circa 1900

Height 26cm x width 10cm x depth 8cm
