Description

A handsome and highly practical late Victorian walnut secretaire bookcase, dating from circa 1880–1890, combining elegant proportions with excellent functionality.

The upper section is fitted with a pair of glazed astragal doors, the panes attractively arranged in a geometric pattern with bevelled glass, opening to reveal a shelved interior ideal for books, decorative objects or collections. The warm walnut has developed a rich mellow tone with attractive figuring throughout.

The base incorporates a beautifully conceived secretaire drawer, opening to reveal a well-appointed fitted interior with central leather inset writing slope, pigeonholes, small drawers and useful compartments, offering both charm and practicality for correspondence or home office use. Beneath sits a spacious cupboard enclosed by a pair of shaped panel doors, providing excellent concealed storage.

The piece displays attractive late Victorian detailing throughout, including moulded cornice, finely shaped drawer front, restrained carved accents and quality brass handles, giving it a smart yet understated appearance.
