Vintage Chinese Hand-Knotted Celadon Ground Carpet

Photos

Description

A decorative vintage Chinese hand-knotted wool carpet, executed in the classic Peking / Ningxia taste, with a softly abrased celadon blue field framed by elegant multiple borders.

The minimalist open field is particularly attractive, showing subtle tonal variation and gentle wear that gives the rug a beautifully mellow, time-softened appearance. It is enclosed within a striking geometric Greek key border, further framed by stylised scrolling floral motifs in shades of navy, pale blue, cream, ochre and small red highlights—very characteristic of Chinese decorative carpets of the mid-20th century.

These Chinese carpets have become increasingly popular with decorators for their restrained palette and ability to sit comfortably in both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Hand-knotted in wool, likely dating from the mid to late 20th century, circa 1960–1980.

A wonderfully decorative furnishing rug with elegant colour and strong visual presence.

Condition:
Honest age-related wear consistent with use, including visible low pile and surface wear to the field, which contributes to its decorative character.
