Description

A finely carved late 19th-century freestanding firescreen executed in solid oak, showcasing elaborate Rococo Revival ornamentation and retaining its original figural needlework tapestry panel.
This decorative firescreen is crafted in richly toned oak with pronounced grain and warm depth of color. The frame demonstrates high-quality carving throughout, featuring scrolling acanthus, floral clusters, pierced cresting, and elegantly shaped cabriole legs terminating in scrolled feet. The carving displays confident execution and dimensional relief typical of skilled late Victorian craftsmanship.
The inset tapestry panel presents a classical figural scene framed within an architectural cartouche. A central courtly figure in period attire is accompanied by attendant figures, set within a stylized interior and landscape composition. Surrounding borders incorporate scrolling foliage, stylized florals, and geometric framing elements rendered in ochre, muted blues, soft reds, and cream against a dark ground.
The reverse is finished in deep red velvet with decorative braid trim, allowing the screen to present attractively from either side.
