Description

A substantial and finely cast pair brass fire dogs, executed in a bold neoclassical taste and conceived with strong architectural presence. Each andiron rises from an imposing four-footed base, the supports cast as scrolling acanthus-form brackets with shaped profiles and incised detailing, terminating in broad, squared feet. The bases display a combination of burnished highlights and darker, stippled patination within the recessed areas, creating a rich contrast that accentuates the sculptural relief.
Above the base, a turned and baluster-form shaft supports a compressed spherical body encircled by a decorative frieze of applied ornament. The band is cast with alternating oval bosses and stylized acanthus leaves, crisply modeled and subtly darkened in the ground to enhance depth. The central urn form is smoothly polished, with gentle surface variation and tonal warmth consistent with age and careful maintenance. The stepped molding above transitions elegantly into a domed collar and a finely proportioned, elongated finial of ovoid form, surmounted by a small knop.
